Switch pasta for spaghetti squash or spiralized zucchini. Most of us love pasta, but unfortunately, with such a high level of carbs and so many extra calories, it’s not always the best thing for our diets. You can easily cut these carbs and calories by substituting your favorite pasta with spaghetti squash or using a spiralizing tool to prepare zucchini in the same shape and size as traditional pasta. Substitute cauliflower for potatoes. Nothing says comfort food quite like mashed potatoes. Unfortunately, this popular side dish is less than healthy – especially for those of us watching our carb intake. Mashed cauliflower is a great alternative because not only does it mimic the rich, creamy taste of traditional potatoes, but it also matches the texture. Chances are you won’t even notice the difference.
Swap out French fries for their sweeter, healthier alternative. Rather than fries made from traditional white potatoes, sweet potatoes make a great substitute. They’re also tastier and much better for you, especially when they’re baked and not fried. And since many more restaurants are beginning to offer this healthier side dish option, it’s never been easier to make better food choices.
Use riced veggies in place of white rice. Another tasty food favorite that’s also high in unnecessary carbs is white rice. The good news is you don’t have to live a rice-free existence to be healthier. In fact, with many different types of riced veggies, including cauliflower, carrots and broccoli, you can enjoy all of your favorite rice recipes or have additional creative and delicious side dish options without any of the guilt.
Replace cow’s milk with nut-based milk. Even if you’re not lactose intolerant, cow’s milk can often be linked to a number of unpleasant side effects, including indigestion and upset stomach. Thankfully, there’s an equally creamy and tasty alternative that is lactose-free and eliminates the potential side effects of dairy. Try substituting your regular milk with a nut-based milk product, such as almond or coconut milk.
