5 Ways We Express Love Through Food

People show affection in a number of different ways. One of the most common – believe it or not – is through food. In honor of Valentine’s Day, we thought it might be fun to look at a few of the ways we use food to show love. And not just with our significant others, but in all of our special relationships.

Eating Dinner as a Family

There have been countless studies on the benefits of gathering as a family to eat dinner together. Not only is it believed to reduce stress and increase happiness levels, but it’s also said to help with portion control, which means it’s good for both our emotional as well as our physical wellness. In today’s busy world, dining as a family can be challenging, but with the right attitude and a little effort, it’s entirely worth it.

Cooking for Those Who are Struggling

Life can be hard sometimes. Having a circle of friends and family members to provide support is priceless. One way many ways people demonstrate this support is by preparing and bringing meals to those who are struggling. Whether it’s someone who’s recovering from an injury or illness, someone who recently lost a loved one or simply someone who’s fallen on hard times. In those instances, it’s the little things, like not having to cook, that can really help ease the burden. Sometimes a nice quiche or vegetable meatloaf is the best way to say, “I’m here for you and I love you!”

Spoiling the Kiddos with Goodies

What kid doesn’t love a fresh-baked cookie or homemade cupcake? Whether it’s Grandma spoiling the grandkids with something sweet before they head home to Mom and Dad, a parent rewarding their star student for a job well-done or just a way to let your little ones know you were thinking of them, baked goods are awesome. And no need to worry about all that sugar, either. There are plenty of creative recipes that are a much healthier alternative but still taste just as decadent as the real deal. (Bonus: our black bean brownies and vegan peanut butter bars even make it possible to sneak an extra serving of veggies in!)

Slipping Our Pets Extra Treats

If you’re a pet parent, you know how good it feels to spoil your animal family member – whether it’s with extra play time, more snuggles or a few additional treats. And while it’s important not to overdo it, the good news is, there are plenty of healthy options for treating your four-legged friend that not only won’t add extra pounds to his or her waistline but are actually beneficial from a health standpoint. If you’re looking for some ideas of how you can treat your loyal companion, check out these three ways to do so with veggies.

Sharing Recipes

We share lots of things with the people we care about, from books and movies to music and – yes – food. When it comes to showing someone how much they mean, ‘what’s mine is yours and what’s yours is mine’ is a great mantra to have. The same goes for recipes. When you taste something divine, you want to share that experience with everyone! Don’t have a favorite recipe or looking for some new ideas? Check out our growing list here. You’re sure to find a few that are worth sharing again and again!

Perhaps Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw said it best when he said: “There is no love sincerer than the love of food.” And what greater way to show someone you care than through food? Give the five things above a try and enjoy more of those special moments in life with your loved ones.
